Abhyanga

Holistic Healing Through Touch

Traditional Ayurvedic Oil Therapy

Abhyanga is a traditional full-body oil massage that's been nurturing people back to balance for thousands of years. Unlike typical massages that focus only on muscles, Abhyanga works on a deeper level—nourishing your skin, calming your nervous system, and helping energy flow freely throughout your body.

The word "Abhyanga" literally means "oil application," but it's so much more than that. It's a meditative practice where specially selected warm oils are massaged into your skin using specific strokes that follow the direction of your body's natural energy channels.

What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is a classical Ayurvedic oil therapy using warm herbal oils selected for your Vata, Pitta, and Kapha balance. Through rhythmic, flowing strokes, the treatment works on the body as a whole — calming the nervous system, improving circulation, and supporting natural detoxification.

Rather than focusing only on muscle tension, Abhyanga nourishes the skin, joints, and deeper tissues while gently releasing accumulated stress. By guiding the body into a restorative state, it promotes better sleep, improved energy, reduced stiffness, and a lasting sense of wellbeing.

More than a massage, Abhyanga is nourishment — encouraging the body’s natural healing processes to restore balance from within.

Understanding Your Unique Constitution

The Three Doshas

In Ayurveda, we recognize that everyone is unique. Your body type, temperament, and health needs are governed by three fundamental energies called doshas:

At Serene Wellness by Perahettiya, we customize every massage based on your unique dosha constitution and current imbalances.

Vata (air and space)

overns movement, creativity, and the nervous system. When balanced, you feel energetic and inspired. When imbalanced, you might experience anxiety, dry skin, or restlessness.

Pitta (fire and water)

governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation. Balanced Pitta brings focus and passion. Imbalanced Pitta can show up as inflammation, irritability, or skin sensitivity.

Kapha (earth and water)

governs structure, stability, and lubrication. When balanced, you feel grounded and calm. Imbalanced Kapha can lead to sluggishness, weight gain, or congestion.
